Happy Dental Hygiene Month!

October 1st officially kicked off 2021’s Dental Hygiene Month, and to celebrate, we’re here to encourage you to take the best care of your teeth as you can. Taking care of your teeth and gums involves daily activities like brushing and flossing, and also professional dental cleanings at appointments which also help your dentist monitor your dental health for any issues before they become health problems.

Dental health goes a long way in protecting your overall wellness, and you deserve to have the beautiful smile that you want.

Why Dental Hygiene Month was Founded

Dental Hygiene Month was founded to help bring awareness to the country about the importance of dental health. Although brushing and flossing every day has been ingrained in us since we were children, it is important to be educated about other risks associated with poor dental hygiene, and this month was designated to spread awareness on these topics.

Dental professionals have known about the importance of celebrating dental hygiene and educating the public for decades going back to 1913 when the first dental hygiene techniques were implemented by Dr. Alfred Civilion Fones. Dr. Fones also coined the term “dental hygienist”.

The Importance of Seeing Your Dentist

At minimum, you should see your dentist at least twice a year to monitor any changes in your dental health and to have a professional cleaning. This is the best way to ensure good dental hygiene habits are being observed and for a dental professional to catch any health problems with your teeth and gums.

You should also see your healthcare professional if you are experiencing any pain or discomfort in order to find the cause of this pain and have a professional recommend a course of treatment.
